What is Futanari?

What is Futanari, and why is it all over social media and so prevalent in otaku culture? 

Futanari (ふたなり) means hermaphroditism in Japanese (literally: [to be of] two kinds), but it is also used more broadly for androgyny (a combination of masculine and feminine characteristics).

More recently, the term is now used outside of Japan to refer to a popular genre of hentai pornographic eroge, manga and anime. This genre usually features characters who have a mostly feminine body but possess both male and female genitalia (testicles are not always present). 

Put simply, the female characters usually have a penis. 

Futanari is often abbreviated to futa(s) either to refer to the genre or the androgynous characters, or the traits of Futanari. 

In Futanari porn, the attributes and characteristics given to both sexes are dependent on the artist. Some characters may possess a combination of a vagina, a penis and testicles, while others will have a just a vagina with a dick protruding from within.
