PlayStation VR 2 coming 2020 alongside PS5 launch

The PlayStation VR 2 (PSVR2) is set to be released in 2020 alongside the launch of the PS5 it has been revealed. It will come with various upgrades such as built-in cameras making it capable of tapping into the world of Augmented Reality (AR) as well as VR.

The upcoming release was confirmed by the publisher Immersive VR Education in a recent financial report that mentions the new headset – saying:

“In 2020, Sony will release PlayStation 5 and a new version of the PlayStation VR headset (PSVR), which will further expand the high-end VR user base – the group intends to support this device with its current software package,”

According to recent estimates, the Playstation VR can now be considered the most successful premium VR headset available commercially with a massive 5 million devices sold. For comparison, the next biggest selling headset was the Oculus Rift with about 1.5 million devices sold. While the original PSVR does not offer the most advanced features among available headsets, it has the advantage of being compatible with the hugely-popular PS4 system. To stay competitive, Sony will need to upgrade their VR technology to at least match the current capabilities of its competitors.

The PS5 is expected to launch in December 2020. No official date has yet been given about the PSVR2 release, but many people expect it to be around the same time as the new system’s launch.

We may get more information about the PS5 and the new VR headset next month as leaked reports point to an official presentation by Sony.
