Over One-Third of Japanese Men in Their 20s Have No Sexual Experience

A large nationwide survey conducted in Japan has revealed that 35.5% of men in their 20s have never had sex, compared to 31.9% of women in the same age group, highlighting ongoing shifts in relationships, dating, and intimacy among younger generations.

Condom manufacturer Sagami Rubber recently released the results of its large-scale “Sex in Japan 2026 Edition” survey, which examined the sexual habits and relationship trends of approximately 14,300 people aged 20 to 60 across all 47 prefectures. The study, one of the largest of its kind in Japan, marks the first such survey since 2018.

The findings showed that 35.5% of men in their 20s reported having no sexual experience, compared to 31.9% of women in the same age group. Across age groups from the 20s to the 50s, men consistently had higher rates of inexperience than women.

The survey also found that many young adults are not currently in relationships. Among unmarried respondents, 51.0% of people in their 20s said they did not have a partner. Overall, 28.5% of unmarried men reported being in a relationship, compared to 37.9% of unmarried women.

In terms of sexual activity frequency, the nationwide average was 1.95 times per month. People in their 20s reported the highest frequency at 4.31 times per month, with activity declining as age increased.

The average age of first sexual experience was 22.02 years overall, with men averaging 23.01 years and women 21.07 years. The survey also reported that the average number of lifetime partners was 9.78, with men reporting 13.31 partners on average and women reporting 6.38.

When asked about satisfaction, 67.5% of respondents overall said they were satisfied with their sex lives. Satisfaction rates were higher among women (75.7%) than men (58.1%).

The survey also examined broader trends, including sexual orientation and relationship patterns. Respondents who said they were attracted to both sexes accounted for 7.1% of men and 9.5% of women overall, with higher percentages among younger generations.

Conducted via web survey in early December 2025, the study reflects ongoing demographic and cultural shifts affecting relationships and personal lives in Japan, particularly among younger adults navigating modern dating, work, and lifestyle pressures.
