Giant Pipe Suddenly Rises 30+ Feet From Road In Osaka

A bizarre incident in Japan recently left commuters stunned after a massive underground steel pipe suddenly shot more than 30 feet into the air, bursting through the pavement at a construction site in Osaka.

The pipe emerged from the ground in a busy area near an elevated roadway, reportedly rising over 10 meters (about 32 feet) overnight. At its highest point, the structure reached roughly 13 meters (around 42 feet) tall and measured about 3.5 meters (11.5 feet) in diameter, creating an unusual sight in the middle of the city.

A pedestrian reportedly noticed pieces of asphalt falling from the cylinder early in the morning, prompting a report to police. The sudden appearance caused traffic disruption in the surrounding area, though no injuries were reported.

According to Osaka city officials, the pipe was part of a sewer construction project. It had been installed underground as a temporary retaining structure used to prevent soil from collapsing while workers connected a sewer line to a rainwater drainage channel designed to reduce flooding.

Authorities believe the unusual “eruption” may have been caused after water inside the pipe was drained, which potentially allowed the hollow structure to float upward due to buoyancy forces underground.

Witnesses in the area described hearing a loud noise before seeing the massive pipe sticking out of the road, with some initially unsure what had happened.

Firefighters and workers eventually managed to lower the pipe by cutting a hole into its side and pumping water into it, increasing its weight and pushing it back down into the ground.

Even after being partially lowered, a portion of the pipe remained visible above the surface, forcing road closures and cleanup operations that disrupted traffic for several days while crews worked to remove the remaining section.

While sinkholes and underground construction issues occasionally occur in Japan, officials and engineers noted that a pipe suddenly rising this dramatically is extremely unusual, leaving the incident as one of the more bizarre construction mishaps the city has seen in recent years.
