A 15-year-old middle school student in Kumamoto City was arrested for assaulting his mother following an argument over his smartphone game addiction habits.
On February 20, at around 12:20 p.m., police received an emergency call from a woman living in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, who reported being “violently attacked by her son.”
Upon arrival, officers found the woman with visible bruises on her face and promptly arrested her teenage son on the spot.
The third-year middle school student allegedly grabbed his 40-year-old mother’s hair and slammed her face into a wall during an argument around noon the same day.
According to the police, the mother and son were the only ones present at the time. While the mother sustained bruises believed to be from the assault, she declined medical treatment, stating, I don’t need to go to the hospital.”
When questioned, the boy admitted to the allegations, saying he “lost his temper” when his mother scolded him for “spending too much time on smartphone games.”
The incident highlights the growing concerns over screen time and smartphone game addiction among Japanese teens, which has resulted in more reports of domestic violence and other related conflicts within households.
