Rino Tazawa, 27, better known online as Yama Torino, was one of the biggest names at JUNGLE, the well-known hostess club in the middle of the district. Top earner, loud on social media, popping up on internet shows — the kind of hostess people actually recognize by face. On September 15 she was arrested for cocaine possession.
The arrest didn’t come out of nowhere. Tokyo Metropolitan Police’s Drugs and Firearms Countermeasures Division — the same unit that goes after high-profile celebrity drug cases — had been sitting on this for about six months. Tips started coming in early spring from people who actually work the nightlife circuit. Multiple sources pointed at her as a regular, heavy user.
Because she was high-profile, they treated the whole thing like a leak could ruin it. They skipped the local Azabu station and set up a quiet task-force room in some other precinct. Tailing her wasn’t easy. Hostess hours are chaotic: dinner dates (dohan) before the shift, after-hours drinking with clients, taxis and club vans bouncing around the city. So they put female officers on her to follow without looking obvious.
Things heated up around her birthday party in late April at the so-called Hostess Club Building in Roppongi. Detectives staked out the street and watched who went in. They didn’t try to walk in as customers — too risky. Instead they focused on the big-spending male regulars. One police source put it bluntly: when a woman is using, a man is almost always involved. Follow the guys dropping serious money and you sometimes find the supply line.
They also dug through her social media and eventually got private phone videos from people close to her. After watching her face and behavior in the footage, one investigator basically said out loud that she was definitely using. That pretty much sealed it.
The club has already taken her off the website, which is the usual first move when a top earner gets busted like this.
Japan is still very unforgiving on cocaine. Even possession can mean real jail time, and the “elite unit” getting involved usually means they were building a solid case, not just hoping something would stick. Whether this stays a simple possession charge or opens up more names in the Roppongi circuit is the part everyone in that world is watching now.
Nightlife in that part of Tokyo has always had a “don’t ask too many questions” vibe. Cases like this are a reminder that the questions eventually get asked anyway.
