Tokyo just wrapped one of those cases that makes you want to check every window lock twice.
A 33-year-old guy named Jun Okada met a woman through an online game back in December 2022. By July 2023 he’d stayed over at her place. The next morning he asked her to be his girlfriend. She said no — cited his money situation — and that should’ve been the end of it. Instead he started showing up unannounced until she blocked him completely.
October 2023 is when it went from clingy to full-on nightmare. Her apartment was first-floor. He slipped in through an unlocked balcony window, found a memo with the key code, and made himself a spare. After that he walked in more than 100 times.
While she was out he’d stay up to two hours. Eat her food. Hang out. Sometimes jerk off in her room. He stole underwear and three expired driver’s licenses because he wanted to see how her face had changed over the years. He photographed her current ID but left it — “she’d be in trouble if it was gone,” he later told the court.
Then it got worse. In March he planted a hidden camera disguised as a USB charger in the living room so he could record her in underwear and naked. He’d swap the SD cards on his regular visits. To cover the stolen underwear he started replacing them with brand-new pairs. He also cleaned the apartment and restocked her fridge with energy drinks. His explanation in court: he “had a desire to be of use to her.”
It finally blew up on March 19. He’d locked the deadbolt from the inside and was just chilling when she came home at 5 p.m. and couldn’t get the door open. He panicked, tried to bolt out the balcony, and ran straight into her. Police grabbed him shortly after.
On September 24 the Tokyo District Court gave him two years and six months, suspended for four years. Charges were unlawful entry, theft, and sexual exploitation plus filming. His father paid the victim 2.5 million yen in settlement money and basically begged the court to let his son get his life together so he doesn’t do it again.
The victim’s statement was short and brutal: it was creepy, it gave her goosebumps, and it was terrifying that he tried to know everything about her life. She wanted serious punishment.
He cried in court, shaved head and mask, and said he was truly sorry and wanted to apologize if there was any way to do it without contacting her.
So that’s the story. Met in a game, got rejected, then spent over a year treating her apartment like his own private dollhouse complete with spy cam and laundry service. The suspended sentence means he’s not sitting in a cell right now, which is the part a lot of people are going to have opinions about.
