A Japanese court has heard horrifying testimony in the trial of a former cosplayer accused of brutally mutilating her boyfriend, with the victim describing acts so extreme that even prosecutors openly questioned “what kind of world” they belonged to, underscoring the sheer abnormality of the alleged abuse.
A disturbing criminal case unfolding in Osaka has drawn renewed attention after graphic courtroom testimony detailed a series of alleged assaults that sound closer to exploitation fiction than real life. On December 10, the Osaka District Court held the third hearing in the trial of Saki Sato, a 23-year-old former cosplayer who stands accused of inflicting severe physical injuries on her live-in boyfriend during their relationship.
According to prosecutors, Sato is charged with three counts of injury stemming from incidents in which she allegedly severed part of the victim’s left nipple, amputated his left ring finger with an axe, and repeatedly struck his face and ears. The injuries ranged from requiring over a week of medical treatment to permanent, irreparable damage.
While Sato has continued to deny the charges in court, the male victim — identified only as “A” — appeared as a prosecution witness and gave testimony that left the courtroom audibly stunned. He described a deeply controlling relationship in which his phone and cash were taken from him, leaving him isolated and dependent.
The first major incident reportedly occurred in September of Reiwa 6 (2024), when A testified that he was ordered to stand naked in a bathtub while Sato slowly closed a pair of small scissors around his left nipple. He described intense pain, being told to stay quiet to avoid police attention, and being forced to stuff a towel into his mouth before the nipple was fully severed. He further testified that Sato photographed the injury and, rather than allowing medical treatment, merely applied a bandage — later feeding the severed nipple to her dog.
The following month, the abuse allegedly escalated even further. A told the court that after Sato discovered a phone call he had made to an adult entertainment establishment during a brief separation, she accused him of infidelity and demanded that he cut off his own ring finger so he would “never wear a wedding ring for another woman.” When he hesitated and attempted only to injure himself superficially, Sato allegedly ordered an axe online, insisting she would do it herself if he could not.
According to the testimony, A ingested large quantities of sleeping pills in hopes of dulling the pain or losing consciousness. He awoke to find Sato waiting with the axe. In the kitchen, his finger was bound and placed on a cutting board before Sato swung the axe down, partially severing it. He described the pain as the worst he had ever experienced, stating that Sato appeared excited as she finished cutting through the remaining flesh.
In one of the most shocking moments of testimony, prosecutors asked what happened afterward. A testified that Sato cooked part of the severed finger in a frying pan and ate it. When the prosecutor responded, “What kind of world is this story from?” A bluntly replied, “The yakuza.” The remaining portion of the finger was allegedly preserved in a bottle of chemicals and stored in a freezer. Requests for hospital treatment were refused, with Sato reportedly questioning why he would “try to reattach it” after “working so hard to cut it off.”
Defense attorneys attempted to cast doubt on the victim’s credibility, questioning why he did not contact police earlier and why he researched methods online. However, observers noted the grim irony that his calm courtroom demeanor only emphasized how completely he had been psychologically overwhelmed at the time.
