Popular South Korean actress Ahn Ha-young just got hit with a wave of online backlash that forced her into a public apology — and cost her some advertising work.
It all started when she appeared on a TV show and talked about her family’s long line of doctors. She mentioned that her great-grandfather had gone to Japan to study medicine, framing it as part of a proud four-generation medical tradition.
Internet users didn’t take it that way. They quickly started digging into her family background and accused the great-grandfather of being a collaborator during Japan’s colonial rule over Korea. The outrage snowballed fast.
Facing the heat, Ahn posted a handwritten apology on social media, writing that she had been ignorant and, as his descendant, sincerely apologized.
The fallout was immediate. Several companies pulled or made private her advertising videos and promotional materials to distance themselves from the controversy.
It’s another reminder of how sensitive historical issues still are in South Korea, even as overall public feelings toward Japan have been improving in recent surveys and political leaders talk about closer ties. One casual mention of a relative studying in Japan decades ago was enough to set off a full-blown career crisis.
