Kyoto’s Gion area is usually all about atmosphere, history, and carefully made details. So it hits different when someone casually destroys one of those details in broad daylight.
A spicy ramen shop in the district had a signature lantern hanging out front — shaped like a chili pepper, handmade by a local Kyoto craftsman who also makes traditional lanterns for the Gion Festival. The owners specifically wanted something authentic instead of a cheap mass-produced version. The piece was valued at around 200,000 yen.
On August 11, security cameras caught a person in a white T-shirt walking up to it, suddenly raising a hand, and smashing the lantern hard enough to wreck it. Then they just walked off like nothing happened. Staff only found out when a customer inside the restaurant noticed the damage and pointed it out.
No clear motive. No confrontation. Just pure random destruction of something carefully made and meaningful to the shop.
It’s the kind of low-effort vandalism that makes you shake your head. Kyoto puts a lot of care into its traditional crafts and street presence. Watching someone treat a custom piece like that feels especially pointless.
Hopefully the person gets identified and has to deal with the consequences. In the meantime, the shop is left replacing a one-of-a-kind lantern that didn’t deserve to end up in pieces on the sidewalk.
