Japan’s Airport Customs Are Catching Some Pretty Bold Attempts Right Now

With foreign visitors pouring into Japan at a record pace — over 21 million in just the first half of 2026 — airport customs officers at places like Haneda are staying busy. Their job is simple on paper: keep out the illegal stuff, especially counterfeit luxury goods and anything people try to sneak past the tax man.

A recent look inside the process showed just how creative (or careless) some travelers get.

One guy arriving from Cambodia walked through with two big cardboard boxes. Officers thought the amount of luggage looked off, so they X-rayed them and took a closer look. Inside were 16 bags and wallets stamped with famous luxury logos. The stitching was loose and the quality was clearly off — classic fakes. He also had 38 kilograms of individually packed clothing. He ended up forfeiting all the suspected counterfeits and paying the required taxes on the clothes.

Then there was a woman coming in from Thailand. Officers found more than 90 soccer jerseys carrying big sports brand logos. They were poorly made, so strong suspicion they were counterfeits. She had to hand them all over and left without them.

The most interesting one involved a woman arriving from Hong Kong. Officers found empty luxury brand boxes in her suitcase, which raised red flags. When the total value of overseas purchases goes over 200,000 yen, you have to pay import duties and taxes. They decided on a thorough search. At one point an officer noticed her making a suspicious move — and sure enough, she had a luxury wristwatch worth more than 1 million yen tucked in her pocket. Customs is investigating her for repeatedly lying and deliberately trying to dodge the taxes.

It’s a good reminder that Japanese customs take this seriously. Counterfeit goods are straight-up illegal to import, and trying to hide high-value items to avoid duties doesn’t usually end well. With so many people coming through the airports these days, officers are clearly keeping a sharp eye on anything that looks even a little off.
