Japan’s cheating scene just got a lot more intense.
Private investigators are reporting a sharp rise in requests coming not from suspicious wives, but from the mistresses themselves. These women are hiring detectives to dig into the wives of the married men they’re sleeping with.
They’re asking for details like what the wife looks like, where she works, whether she’s also cheating, and even which kindergartens or schools the kids attend. The boldest requests go further — some want detectives to capture the exact moment they walk into a love hotel with the husband, basically manufacturing hard evidence of the affair so they can force a divorce.
Relationship writer Haruame Hibi says this aggressive approach is tied to women’s growing financial independence. In the past, a mistress might hope the guy would leave his wife but eventually back off once she realized the divorce would leave him broke. Now, if a woman can afford a private detective in the first place, she’s often in a position to support him even after a messy split. So instead of waiting around, some are pushing hard to make it happen.
The recent scandal involving actor Ryoki Miyama and actress Maria Kano put a spotlight on how messy these situations can get. Miyama’s wife said she had no idea anything was going on until the reports came out.
Meanwhile, a survey from one detective agency found that about one in three married people admit to secretly messaging someone of the opposite sex online. The barrier to starting an affair might be lower than ever, but the consequences — and the tactics — are getting more ruthless.
