Tokyo police have arrested a Finnish national after customs found about 3.2 kilograms of cocaine hidden in her luggage at Haneda.
Minna Eveliina Mannonen is accused of trying to bring the drugs in from France on October 4 for sale, in violation of the Narcotics Control Act. Police put the street value at about 76.8 million yen, roughly $486,000 at around 158 yen to the dollar.
Haneda Customs found the stash during a routine bag check. Investigators say the cocaine had been split into two clear bags and packed into a suitcase that had been modified with a false bottom.
Mannonen denied the charge. She told investigators the cocaine was not hers and that she had been set up, suggesting her ex-boyfriend or someone else might have planted it.
Police are treating it as a commercial smuggling attempt, not a personal stash. A false-bottom case and more than three kilos is a hard story to walk back, and she is sticking to hers anyway.
