A 54-year-old man has been arrested in Tokyo on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl after getting her drunk at a karaoke place.
The suspect, Naomichi Moribe, is accused of contacting the junior high school student after she posted about personal troubles on social media. He messaged her offering to “help,” then invited her out for karaoke this past May.
Once they were in the private room, police say he encouraged her to drink alcohol mixed with cough medicine. After she fell asleep, he allegedly assaulted her and recorded the whole thing on his smartphone.
Moribe, who is unemployed and lives in Yokohama, has stayed silent during police questioning so far.
This isn’t his first time getting caught. Back in February he was arrested for allegedly committing an indecent act against a 16-year-old girl at another karaoke spot in Shinjuku. When police seized his phone and other devices this time around, they found more than 60 videos. Investigators are now looking into whether there are additional victims.
It’s a grim reminder of how some predators still use social media and quiet karaoke boxes to target vulnerable teens.
