Minamo is retiring from adult video in December. Before she goes, she’s been talking about what she was like before the cameras — and it’s not the origin story you’d expect.
As a kid she was the odd one out. She spent whole days lost in princess make-believe, told other children she could fly, and claimed random places were her house. “I was that kind of kid, so naturally I couldn’t make any friends,” she said.
Junior high didn’t fix it. She still couldn’t open up, but she also didn’t want to be seen as the loner. She plucked her eyebrows, copied gyaru fashion, and tried to attach herself to the popular group. The loneliness didn’t go away.
Then came her first (and she says only) real heartbreak. The guy who dumped her started dating a girl she couldn’t stand. That was the moment she decided high school would be different. If she actually tried, there was no way she wouldn’t be the one getting attention.
So she reset. Dyed her bright gyaru hair back to black, cut her bangs like an idol, and became a manager for the baseball team. It worked. Boys suddenly treated her like the school’s Kasumi Arimura. She got the popularity she’d wanted.
And then she dated some of them.
She couldn’t stand it. The raw sexual energy of high-school boys put her off. In one case she couldn’t even get through a single kiss — the saliva felt gross. She ended it. “Oh,” she realized, “so this is what men are really like.”
A girl who once couldn’t handle a kiss went on to become one of the most visible adult actresses in Japan. Lingerie campaigns, magazine covers, movie roles, even a first novel. She’s 26 now and walking away from AV at the end of the year.
The contrast is the whole story: the isolated kid who reinvented herself to be wanted, got what she wanted, decided she didn’t like what came with it, and then built a career on the thing she once found repulsive. Make of that what you will.
