Lawson’s New “Single-Minded” Bentos: Depressing Poverty Lunch or Genius Focus Mode?

Lawson just dropped a new bento line that’s so stripped-down it feels like a dare.

They’re calling it Ittentoppasugi — basically “super single-minded.” Translation: rice, one topping, and that’s it. No pickles. No tamagoyaki. No little side of hijiki. Just a mountain of rice and whatever they decided to throw on top that day.

When they first announced these, a lot of people online didn’t exactly celebrate. The vibe was more “wow, inflation really got us, huh?” Regular convenience store bentos keep getting more expensive, so a 297-yen boxed lunch starts looking pretty tempting even if it looks like something you’d eat during a very sad study session.

I grabbed two of them to see if they were actually depressing or just… focused.

The salmon one (297 yen)
It’s rice and a modest amount of bodakko — that heavily salted salmon from Akita that’s supposed to make a huge pile of rice taste amazing even if you barely have any fish. And yeah, it’s salty. Not “I need a glass of water immediately” salty, but definitely more intense than the usual flaked salmon you get in onigiri.

You get a lot of rice. The whole box is around 260g, and most of that is white rice. I finished the salmon with about a quarter of the rice still sitting there, which is the exact moment it starts feeling a little lonely.

The sausage one (397 yen)
This one feels less like poverty food and more like a cheap treat. You actually get a decent amount of sliced sausage, and they put a light teriyaki-style sauce on it so it’s not just sad beige meat sitting on rice. The box is a bit heavier too (just over 300g). It’s still extremely simple, but it has a kind of “I know what I want and I’m not apologizing” energy.

Neither of these is going to make you feel like you’re eating something fancy. They’re not trying to. They’re cheap, filling, taste decent, and you can grab them at almost any Lawson without thinking too hard.

Is it a sign that everyday food is getting sadder? Kind of. Is it also just a very honest “here’s rice and one thing you like” lunch for people who are tired of paying 600+ yen for a bento with five tiny sides? Also yes.

There’s apparently a corn version coming too. At this point I’m curious enough to try it. Sometimes single-minded is just another word for “I don’t have time for this today.”
