A new action roguelite called Swords & Slippers is getting a ton of attention, and not just because of the gameplay. The developers decided to turn classic fairy-tale princesses into sexy action heroines, and some people are not happy about it.
The game reimagines characters like Rapunzel, Snow White, and Red Riding Hood as fighters taking on the evil stepmothers who stole their kingdoms. Each one gets her own combat style and a very exaggerated, fantasy-style design that leans hard into the fanservice. The recent Rapunzel trailer blew up and racked up millions of views, which of course meant the usual crowd showed up to call the designs “offensive.”
Instead of apologizing or quietly toning things down, the developers clapped back. One of their replies basically boiled down to: nobody here is interested in your agenda. They’re making the game they want for the audience that actually wants it, and they’re not planning to change course.
It’s a pretty rare stance these days. A lot of studios fold the second the outrage starts. Swords & Slippers is being developed by Mass Creation, and the combination of fast combat, fairy-tale vibes, and unapologetically attractive female characters seems to be hitting a nerve — in a good way for a lot of players who’ve been missing that kind of design in bigger games.
Whether the finished product lives up to the hype is still an open question, but the message from the team is already clear. They’re not interested in making a game for people who don’t like what they’re doing.
